The School of Chemistry at Universidad Nacional De San Agustin (UNSA) in Arequipa, Peru hosted a five day installation, service and maintenance visit from Sercon Service Engineer Dave Harris in July.

The UNSA team, led by Prof. Juan Lopa and Gina Daza, undertake geological studies for PhD students including sulphur analysis from volcanoes, using a range of Sercon instrumentation, including an HS2022, an Iso-Earth+, an HT-EA, a CryoFlex and TOC system. This site works in conjunction with a project coming out of the US with Tim Filley (professor of geochemistry in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and. Planetary Sciences and the Department of Agronomy) & Janine Sparks (research associate at the University of Ohio).

Initially the visit’s objective was to finish reinstalling the CryoPrep unit after Dave’s colleague, James Hanson visited earlier in the year to carry out a suit-wide instrument move. However, delayed building work meant that the equipment hadn’t yet been commissioned, so Dave turned his hand to getting everything up and running.

Like many of our engineers, Dave enjoys exploring the locations he travels to as well as the work itself, and Arequipa is one of his favourite places in the world: “Arequipa is a foodie town with lots of good restaurants and bars and Piso Sours cocktails drunk on balconies with the stunning views Mount Misti is a must at sunset,” he explained. “The Shrimp Ceviche & Alpaca steak is amazing there. On my last visit I got to visit the Colca Canyon to see the Condors, though sadly this time I did not have enough time for a trek.”
