International Women into Engineering Day

To mark International Women into Engineering Day, we thought it would be a good time to talk about our relationship with Crewe University Technical College (UTC), as part of which Sercon is providing a T-Level placement to one of their students, Maheen Jamil.

At Sercon, Maheen is gaining hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of the manufacturing and production processes involved in building complex scientific instruments. As part of her training, she will be contributing to the complete build of an HS2022 system, which will allow her to understand the instrument’s design and functionality from the ground up.

During this process, Maheen will be learning a wide range of technical skills, including electrical wiring, interpreting engineering schematics, and gas plumbing. These skills are essential for assembling high-precision instruments and ensuring they meet strict performance standards. Through this experience, she will also develop a deeper understanding of quality control, system integration, and troubleshooting in a real-world manufacturing environment.

This opportunity will not only enhance Maheen’s technical capabilities but also give her valuable insight into the collaborative and detail-oriented nature of instrument production at Sercon.

Maheen commented as follows: “I enjoy engineering because it brings together creativity and problem-solving in a really practical way. I have always found that I learn and work best in a hands-on environment, and engineering gives me that chance to apply ideas to real-world situations. What makes engineering better is the impact it has on everyday life, from trains to the different systems and technologies that keep everything running. It’s a field where I can use my strengths to make a real difference.”
