Meet Tom Hankinson

Development Scientist Tom Hankinson joined the Sercon team earlier this summer, with a remit to develop and improve new and existing product lines. 

With an academic background, Tom is also in the final stages (submission of thesis) of a PhD in Miniature Low Cost Magnetic Sector Mass Spectrometers at the University of Liverpool.

“I come from an electrical engineering background, having an integrated masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Liverpool and specialise in building scientific instrumentation,” Tom explained. “For my masters I worked on proof-of-concept designs for bioreactors on the international space station as a part of the Microage project and I also have expertise in additive manufacturing, embedded systems engineering and mass spectrometry.”

However, Tom is enjoying working on new commercial mass spectrometers instead of one off academic prototypes, as well as being part of the Sercon team and his new colleagues.

Tom plans to develop upgrades for some of the existing product range and is also working with the leadership team on exciting new developments  to support the company’s future ambitions. 

When he’s not working, Tom enjoys tinkering in his workshop and continues to build his own more novel mass spectrometers at home. He also enjoys the outdoors and regularly hikes and climbs.
