Rob Kameny Profile
Czech national and Systems Engineer Robert Kameny adeptly oversees the needs of Sercon’s European clientele from our operational hub in Prague, serving as the linchpin for Sercon Europe. His story and career path are more unusual than many.
Rob left the Czech Republic after school, and initially spent time in France before moving to the UK, where he worked in the horse racing sector following his childhood dream of becoming a jockey. However, as his riding skills improved, he was unable to make weight, so moved back into education at Staffordshire University, where he studied Aeronautical Engineering.
He then took a Lab Technician role at Sercon, and with additional training and development, quickly became a Systems Engineer, travelling around the UK, Europe and beyond to service and maintain Sercon instrumentation. Alongside his work, Rob joined a gliding club and has since achieved his PPL (Private Pilot’s Licence), another personal passion.
The onset of the pandemic in 2020 drove a dramatic change in circumstances; borders closed as Rob was on holiday visiting friends and family in the Czech Republic after returning from a maintenance visit to a customer in Taiwan. He was effectively trapped.
While the forced relocation brought dramatic changes to Rob’s personal life, having taken his laptop with him on holiday, he was able to work remotely. His role involves a high level of communication with customers as well as with the Sercon team, but video calling meant he still felt very much part of the team and was able to be fully effective.
As European pandemic restrictions started to be lifted, Rob was able to be the first engineer back on the road and Sercon were delighted to be able to make Rob’s working arrangements permanent. Director Garry Armstrong explained:
“Our team covers the needs of customers right across Europe, as well as worldwide. Having an experienced systems engineer like Rob based in the heart of Europe and leading customer relations in the region just made logical sense and meant we could also support Rob’s desire to remain based there.”
In his spare time, Rob enjoys indulging his passion of flying light sport aircraft.
