UAB Barnas, Lithuania
Service Engineer Henry Cooke recently visited Vilnius, Lithuania to install an Sercon EArth for the Mass Spectrometry department at UAB Barnas, where it will be used for carbon dating.
The Sercon EArth was installed alongside their own graphitisation machine, the CORgis as part of a development project by Julius Paužolis aimed at efficient sample preparation for their AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometer). The EArth will be used to combust, quantify and separate the carbon in samples such as bone, before the CORgis converts all CO2 into graphite. This graphite is then used as a sample on their AMS, for 14C analysis.
Making sure the two systems work effectively together, on both a sampling and software front was the biggest challenge, as it always is to integrate different instruments. The correct flow rates and timings were worked out once the two systems were connected.
Wherever there is time to do so, Henry likes to explore the cities he visits for Sercon – this time he took the time to explore Vilnius, seeing sights such as the three crosses and the cathedral clock tower.
