University of Birmingham Installation
Systems Engineer Tom Iordanidis recently completed an ABCA2 with versa installation for Professor Gareth Wallis from the School of Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation Sciences at Birmingham University.
Tom spent five days on site; the three day installation and commissioning of the product was followed by two days of product training for the team who will be using the equipment in their research into exercise, metabolism & nutrition.
The instrument will be used to detect Carbon-13 isotopes in research and service provision related to measuring how much of an ingested carbohydrate source (such as a sports drink) is used for energy during exercise. This way it is possible to optimise sports nutrition formulations and feeding strategies for sports nutrition companies or athletes looking to maximise their exercise performance.
After several supervised (and successful) installations, this was Tom’s first solo job. While his colleagues up the road in Sercon’s Crewe HQ were ready to support if needed, Tom completed the installation without a hitch.
FDA certified and manufactured to ISO 13485 the ABCA2 is the high performance, high sample throughput isotope ratio mass spectrometer for breath analysis – there is more information here: https://sercon-instruments.com/irms_instruments/abca2/
