Arnolds Amateur Strongman Championships 2024

We caught up with our sponsored amateur strongman athlete Matty Franklin as he returned from his first international competition in the US, the Arnold Amateur Strongman Championships.

In summary, wow, what an amazing experience Matty had, especially with lots of pro’s and ex-pro’s wandering round the expo with all the competitors like Matty!

“The Saturday comp was a long day, we arrived around 9am and didn’t get finished until around 8pm,” Matty explained. “It was a tough day, we were rushed to warm up and then we’d be waiting another hour to two hours to actually compete. This happened on all four events and it just made it really challenging.” He doesn’t think that was down to organisers, who did their absolute best with the amount of athletes and space they were given, just the contrast between that situation and other competitions he has taken part in before: “I’m used to being in fast paced comps and with all the down time, I just struggled to keep my momentum going throughout the day.”

As a learning experience, the trip was fantastic: “While I didn’t make the final on Sunday this year but I’ll be back in the future, with clear expectations, to make sure that happens,” Matty affirms, “It was a great experience and wouldn’t have been possible without Sercon! Something I am very grateful for!”

Matty’s next stop is the King of the North contest ON 5th May to qualify for England’s strongest man! – Good Luck from everyone at Sercon!
